Legal Secretary
The Staff Counsel Office for CNA Insurance Companies, Law Offices of
Charles Peter Hopkins II, is seeking to expand and hire an experienced
Legal Secretary. We are a Tort-Personal Injury Defense Civil Practice.
Individual will assist attorneys and other legal staff by providing
legal administrative support, which includes all aspects of document
preparation, and coordination of schedules and calendars for attorneys
and case work. Ideal candidate will have experience with complex general
liability litigation and medical malpractice law.
Job Responsibilities:
- Handles all aspects of document preparation.
- May draft, prepare and distribute legal
correspondence and memos, pleadings, motions under management direction.
- May assist in gathering and organizing exhibits,
documents, trial data and other materials in response to subpoenas,
discovery requests, interrogatories, motions for summary judgment etc.
- Organizes and maintains all electronic and other
files and legal archives.
- Schedules and coordinates attorney and case load
calendars and calendars all dates and trial dates.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- In-depth knowledge of legal terminology,
procedures and practices as well as overall general knowledge of the
insurance industry and the business units.
- Excellent internal/external customer interactive
skills and teaming skills.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office
suite and other business related software systems.
- Excellent organizational skills including ability
to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
including professional phone etiquette and the ability to draft
complex written correspondence.
Education & Experience Required:
- Associates degree with course work or applicable
certifications preferred or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 2 years experience with insurance
defense.

with experience working for an insurance defense firm. Experience in the
defense of architects and engineers in litigated matters involving
claims made against professionals for design, engineering and
construction management services in professional liability cases is a
substantial plus.

Job Summary
Responsible for all aspects of a defense litigation

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for handling of all aspects of cases
of highest complexity and exposure from inception to conclusion.
- Responsible for all aspects of the defense of
litigation. Reports to claims divisions and clients on all
developments in the case as required by the claims department. May
supervise, train, or mentor paralegals or other attorneys..
- Tries cases. Makes all court appearances, engages
in trial preparation, motions, discovery and negotiations.
- Performs all legal work as necessary on personal
case load and supports other attorneys as necessary.
- Provides research, legal analysis, factual
information, counsel and guidance on legal questions or issues.
Keeps current with legal developments.
- Prepares position papers on various legal issues
and interpretation of contractual provisions.
- Works independently in resolving legal cases with
minimal supervision.
- Ability and willingness to handle well other
types of cases outside the medical malpractice field and to handle
other job duties as assigned.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
- In depth knowledge of medical malpractice and
insurance defense litigation handling, including experience in
reporting to claims representatives.
- Senior level advanced knowledge of the theories,
principles, practices and procedures of litigation management.
- Excellent verbal and written communication,
negotiation and presentation skills. Excellent client and claims
interactive skills.
- Excellent negotiation, consultative and
facilitation skills with the ability to effectively interact with
all internal and external business partners.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment, and to
work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills,
and senior level skill in managing ambiguous situations and issues.
- Proven ability to take a proactive long-term view
of business goals and objectives in order to achieve strategic
business results.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other
business-related software.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree with JD, and admission to the
Bar of New Jersey.
- Minimum seven years of claims and/or law firm
experience with a proven track record of results.
- Minimum of 5 years of trial experience with a
preference within architects & engineers professional malpractice
claims

I am looking to hire
a qualified associate with 2 plus years experience.
They need not be able to try cases, but should be able to handle review
of med records, taking depositions and attending arbs and motion hearings with little
supervision. I do not need someone with more than 5-6 years experience,
although I know many are out there right now.
